Way to go, Jordan!
A final round 71 propelled Jordan Higgins to a 3rd place finish at the Horizon League Golf Championship. Jordan’s play led his Wright State Raiders to a 2nd place finish in the team competition.
Two Man Team – May 21 and 22, 2011
Grab your best friend, the best golfer you know (or the best sandbagger) and file an entry for the Two Man Team Championship. Entry fee is $10.00 per team and the deadline for entry is Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 6:00 pm.
Sidewalk Sale – May 7-8 and 14-15
We have some items remaining from the Marchi Madness Sale. On the weekends of May 7-8 and 14-15 we will mark it down one more time, put it out front and see if it will go away. If you need or know someone who needs some good used equipment, this is the last chance!
Driver and Wedge Fitting
We have the capability to fit you for a TaylorMade R11 or Ping K15 Driver as well as Ping Tour, TaylorMade, Cleveland and Bridgestone wedges.
Driver Fitting:
K15: This is a new entry from Ping and will aid the person who fights a slice. We have the K15 in Stiff and Regular and will help you through the selection process.
R11: The fitting process for an R11 is a little more complicated. The R11 has 3 different shaft options and several settings for lie, face angle and weight positions. This allows the fitter many options to try to help improve your distance and accuracy. If you like the club you hit, you can take it with you!
Wedge Fitting:
The important factors we consider for wedge fitting are:
· The degree of bounce (extremely important on bunker shots and shots from heavy rough)
· And the number of wedges needed to fill the gaps. Most players today carry at least three wedges.
Bounce: Most players do not use enough bounce. Bounce is critical for those who are afflicted with the “chip yips.” If the bounce on your wedge is correct, you should be able to play shots without being “wristy.” Most players fear hitting the shot “fat” and the right hand passes the left through impact. This occurrence eliminates shaft lean. Therefore, the leading edge of the club head works up, not down, and a bladed shot will result. With the correct bounce the player will go through impact with the left hand in the lead position (maintaining shaft lean), the leading edge will slide under the ball, and the bounce of the sole will keep the blade from digging.
Filling the Gaps: Through the decade of the 90’s the equipment producers strengthened the lofts on the iron clubs. They did this so they could make you think you gained some distance, when in reality your were hitting a 7 iron with a number 8 stamped on the sole! Making the lofts stronger on the short irons was okay, but making the lofts stronger on the long irons made them tough to get in the air. The invention of the hybrid solved the long iron (2-3-4) problem. But the hybrid also provided an additional benefit, it replaced the high lofted fairway woods as well (hence the name Hybrid, a club that is part fairway wood, part long iron). This occurrence opened some space in a players’ bag, and players began to add wedges. Most players find the 9-10 degree gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge tough to manage. This necessitates the need to add a Gap wedge (50-52 degrees). And at Cassel Hills as well as most modern courses with deep bunkers and terraced greens, a lob wedge (60 degrees) is advisable.
Ball Bruises and Divots
We seem to being getting numerous players who either don’t know or don’t care about fixing ball bruises and replacing divots. Those of you in the know, PLEASE HELP. If you see a bruise or a loose divot, please replace it! This practice really helps with weed encroachment and smoothes out the putting surfaces.
Practice Area (also please rake the bunker and fix your ball bruises)
We are fortunate to have a really nice area to practice the short game, and we encourage our players to take advantage of this area. But the short game area is limited to the green, the bunker and the surrounding area. This area does not encroach into Holes 6-7-8 or permit play on holes 6-7-8. We have had some people using the 7th tee and green as an extension of the practice area, it is not. Also, if you go out to practice at this area before your round it does not give you the license for complimentary play on either the 7th or 8th hole. Also, if you take a cart to this area, please do not use the cart to gather your practice balls!
Thanks, John Marchi
