Cassel Hills Newsletter
April, 2011
Here’s to hoping the weather will soon stabilize and the 2011 golf season will finally be off and running. The golf course came through the winter in great shape. Marty has the greens running nicely and the fairways mowed down really tight. The course (at this writing) is much dryer than normal for this time of year. Some things to notice: Renovation of the tee complex at #3 and #18; New red tees under construction at Holes #6 and #15; Additional tee space being added to #3 and #18 white tees; Some of the greens are being mowed a little different to accentuate the collar areas and enhance the shape of the green complex.
We can fit you with an R11, for $399
For you right handed players in the market for an R11 we have fitting clubs available. The new R11 has two loft offerings (9.0 and 10.5) plus the Fujikura Blur shaft in R and S, and the shaft is offered in weights of 60 and 65 grams. As an added benefit, once we get you fit correctly and if you want, you can take that club with you! Once the flex and the weight of the shaft are determined, the club head and lie and loft angles are “tuned” to minimize flight characteristics. This “tuning” is done by adjusting the shaft and face angles (at the club’s hosel and sole, using a torx wrench). This procedure is done on the spot. Ain’t technology wonderful!

Teachers – Smeachers
The talking heads are having a field day with this latest controversy. Hank and Tiger split, and then Sean Foley and Hank in a war of words, and Sean Foley taking on some of the critics. Give me a break! If for one minute anyone thinks that a world class player is a success because of the instructor, you need to rethink. A world class player is an entirely different breed of cat. The skill level, self confidence and self belief they possess is light years above what any normal player can fathom, and these talents are not acquired from a golf instructor. There is an old cliché, “Those that can do, and those that can’t teach.” This quote seems quite appropriate for these schmoes. These instructors to the stars became teachers because they were not equipped to be world class players. All these guys can play a very good game of golf, but nowhere near the level physically or mentally of the world’s best players. The following quip is attributed to Lee trevino, and was meant as a joke, but a lot of truth rests in these words, “Never take a lesson from someone who can’t beat you!” And when it seems it can’t get any stranger, a war of words breaks out, all started by the tweeting Sean Foley! This thin skinned snake oil salesman takes umbrage with Brandel Chamblee and Johnny Miller over the analysis and progress of Tiger’s latest swing change. Can you believe his audacity and immaturity? He chided Chamblee about his number of missed cuts in relation to the number of his tour starts. How many cuts has Sean Foley ever made, and how many tour events did he play in? My goodness, you have to listen to what Chamblee and Johnny Miller have to say about another player’s swing and game, because those two guys have been there and done that. So, Sean Foley and Hank Haney, take a reality pill. Lose the heightened sensitivity, the self aggrandizing and the self importance. Just assume your rightful place as an aide to these great players. No more important than their caddy, their nutritionist or their trainer. To Butch Harmon, just keep doing what you’re doing, you are the only one who realizes the player is the star and you are just a facilitator, and you have a 30 year track record of really helping a world class player. And as Simon and Garfunkel sang in “Mrs. Robinson”, Where have you gone, David Leadbetter? (well maybe not)
The Europeans
The talking heads are wringing their hands about European domination. OMG, what’s wrong with American golf, the Europeans hold the top 4 positions in the world rankings, the sky is falling, the sky is falling! Come on, we’ve known for 25 years the Euros were growing great players. Ever hear of Faldo, Woosnam, Lyle, Langer, Ballesteros, Olazabal? Did you consider the fact that maybe that group would lead to another great wave of players? The state of U.S. golf is in great shape, with guys like Watney, Johnson, Mahan, Fowler, Kim, O’Hair et al, I think in just a few years the world rankings will look a little different, and BTW, it is a global game.
WARNING - Watch the Web
Be very cautious when buying golf equipment on the Internet. Counterfeit clubs from China look are flooding the market and they do not possess the quality or playing performance of the top brands. What are the differences? The shaft could be marked Stiff, but really be a L or A flex, club heads intended to weigh 200 grams, may weigh 300 grams, the lofts and lies may be well off the industry standards. And it isn’t just limited to golf clubs, that premium brand of golf ball may be nothing more than a range ball with a great paint job. Warning signs: If the retailer has multiple offerings of the same club, at the same price, be cautious. If you have purchased equipment, check the graphics, they may be sloppy, and the logo is often larger than those stamped on a legitimate offering. Also, if the club is supposed to be Titanium, attach a magnet, magnets will not stick to Titanium. Everyone loves a great deal, but it needs to be the real deal.
