Cassel Hills Newsletter

August, 2011
Sorry for the reissue.  But I mistakenly omitted the results of the Club Championship B Flight and Super Senior A Flight.  My sincere apologies to both Shawn McElroy and Ron Rehmert.

Battle of the Sexes

We would like your thoughts about a new event we would like to add to the schedule. Battle of the Sexes would be a Ryder Cup style team competition pitting a woman’s team against a men’s team.  This event is still in the developing stages but here are some preliminary details:

  • Two 8 person teams
  • Men play from BLUE tees;  Women play from RED tees
  • This competition would be 18 holes consisting of  three 6 hole matches: Holes 1-6: Best Ball Net,  7-12: Alternate Shot, 13-18: Scramble
  • One point awarded for each match, those matches ending in a tie would split the point making a total of 12 points up for grabs.
  • TBD: Date – Choosing Teams- Handicap %.
  • We need your feedback.

Clubhouse Grounds – Thanks, Sheila!!

If you’ve noticed the grounds around the Clubhouse looking a little better than make sure to give a thanks to Sheila Fox.  Sheila has graciously donated her time to sprucing up the planning beds and the shrubs around the clubhouse and areas on the golf course.

Club Championship – Match Play – Youth will be served!!

For years Cassel Hills has had an exceptional contingent of players aged 40 and above.  The Ring of Honor is loaded with names of players who have won this event when they were well on the north side of 40.  The 2011 Championship may signal an era of change, as the finalists, Jordan Higgins and Josh Alcorn have barely escaped their teens.  This year’s championship was also the first year that the final match was slated for 18 holes (versus the traditional 36 hole final). However, the combatants were doing their best to play 36 holes, as the match became a marathon.  Jordan and Josh went through 24 pain staking holes before Jordan’s birdie on the 6th hole gave him the victory.

A Flight: John Whitley brought his “A” game and dethroned the defending champ Kyle Beeson.

B Flight: Shawn McElroy played an outstanding round of golf (medal score 76) in beating Mike Moore in the "B"Flight final.

Super Senior: John Whitley beat Tom Justice on Friday, then after taking the “A” flight title on Saturday,  he captured the Super Senior Final on Sunday by defeating the defending champion, Josh Weaver.  That adds up to a Semi-final and two Finals victories in 3 days!!

Super Senior A Flight: The ageless Ron Rehmert took 22 holes to oust tough as nails Dorsey Noble and claim victory in the Suoper Senior "A" Flight final.

Ladies: Cindy Thompson marched through a strong field to post her 2nd match play win.  Cindy Wood needed all 18 holes to best veteran Kay Lowe in the Ladies A Flight final.

Bridgestone Ball Fitting

This years’ event was a major success.  Over 20 players were tested and a golf ball recommendation provided.

Rants and Raves (and if you don’t like what I write, delete the drivel)

Darren Clarke and Northern Ireland:  The patriarch of NI golf finally gets his major.  I was almost  pulling as hard for Darren as I was for Tom Watson in 2009.

Fred Whittemore: On July 13, Fred shot 74 (3 strokes under his age!)

Bizarro World:  Elin Nordegren is dating an ex-boyfriend of Rachel Uchitel, didn’t she just divorce one!

John Whitley: Two Club Championships in 3 days! I’ve decided who I want to be when I grow up!

Former CCN Head Professional Lee Rinker was tied for the lead after two rounds at the Senior British Open and eventually finished 7th!

To the Cassel Hills players for their strong support of the Bridgestone Fitting experience, of course free golf balls certainly didn’t hinder participation.

Stevie Williams: Tiger disappears for two years, you stick by him, then he pink slips you.  His lack of gratitude is only exceeded by his arrogance.
